Preserve - verb - to keep alive or in existence; make lasting.

Preservation of the APBT is a sticky subject that has sparked many a battle between breed enthusiasts.  It makes sense if you think about it.  Many of us are so passionate about keeping the breed "alive or in existence" that we can be downright rabid about just how that should be done.

Buy Zithromax Without Prescription, The American Pit Bull Terrier falls into the same bucket of trouble that some other historical working dogs have drowned in.  That is to say, the breed's original purpose -- combat against other animals and his own kind -- does not transfer pleasantly into today's modern world.  Some other breeds have become extinct when the reason for their breeding died off, while others have been brought back from the brink, albeit with some changes to make them more socially acceptable.  While I don't think the APBT is in any danger at present of dying off completely, we do face the issue of how to prevent him from becoming "just another dog" as more novices get into breeding "pits" and more old-time dog breeders retire.

So what constitutes preservation?  Is a breed protected and "made lasting" if the modern incarnations are physical replicas of the dogs of old?  Is it possible to maintain a breed in its entirety if certain aspects of its breeding are considered undesireable in the world that we find ourselves in today?  What happens when breed stewards are forced to choose between what is traditional and what is workable now?

I have talked, bantered, and scuffled with a lot of different people from different walks of life.  One type of APBT enthusiast (which seems to be in the minority) feels as though the breed would be better off preserved only in the history books if the alternative is to exist as a "hollow shell" of the former gladiator.  At the other extreme is the (usually casual) owner who feels that Pit Bulls are just fine living as normal dogs and family pets; no further preservation is required.  There are also the weekend warriors who do their part to preserve the breed through licensed competions in the show ring, weight pull, and so on.  And there are admittedly going to be some APBT people who are doing as the breed forefathers have been doing for generations, just more quietly now given the potential severe repercussions.

To look at some of the options that are available to us nowadays, it is easy to see why there is such debate about the best way to preserve the APBT.  These dogs are such versatile athletes with such willing-to-please, do-or-die attitudes that they can do virtually anything.  (Or at least that is what they are supposed to be.)  And it seems like new sports and functions for dogs are popping up all the time.  There are two long-standing registries (and numerous other newer ones) for the breed which offer a variety of different events for the dogs.  A short list would have to include conformation dog shows, weight pulls, dock diving, treadmill sprints, hang-time (aka springpole), obedience, agility, tracking, protection sports, and so on.  And then there are real-world jobs for these dogs such as search-and-rescue (SAR), therapy work, narcotics detection, big game hunting, and use as service animals.

I wish it were within my power to simply give the answer to the question "how do we preserve the American Pit Bull terrier?"  But with so many varied people having a vested interest in these dogs, the perfect answer simply does not exist.  What makes sense to one mindset will be foreign to another and downright ludicrous to a third.  The APBT is so widespread that it's safe to assume that people from every culture have had their hands on these dogs, and they've all found their own use for them.

I can give my thoughts on how I personally would like to see the breed preserved.  First, while I believe that this dog is not just a type, a look, I do think that is a good place to start.  An APBT should look like an APBT, and that's why we have the conformation ring and the opinion of our respected judges to help us, particularly for those of us who are rank newbies.  Its not just in the turn of stifle, the ear carriage, the feet, the tailset, but the whole picture.  If you were to see that animal walking on the scene from down the street, would you recognize it as a Pit Bull before it got close to you?  If you believe that form follows function, then there is a reason that the APBT looks the way he does.  Which is why when breeders start creating their own specialized look, emphasizing physical features they like for themselves, or banking on a particular color -- in short, breeding for things not outlined in the breed standard -- they start to move away from the APBT on the whole.

I've heard this breed described as a dog with a big motor inside, which is arguably a more important point of preservation than his looks.  How do you hang on to the grit, determination, drive, and heart that was bred into these dogs through generations of facing adversity?  Our dogs today have it pretty easy.  So how can we sufficiently challenge them?  Some would say that we cannot without moving outside the legal limits.  I personally like to challenge my dogs, body and brain alike, by asking them to do a variety of things which push them outside their comfort zone.  I will ask a lazy dog to weight pull or a high-drive dog to do a group sit-stay with other dogs.  That is not to say that I don't work my dogs in activities that they enjoy, but I feel as though its also important to establish that they will push themselves because I ask them to, not just because its something they want anyway.

Some ask why it is even important to preserve the drive, grit, yada yada yada.  After all, they say, can't Pit Bulls just be regular-type dogs?  Why do they need all that if it's not being used for something immoral?  A pet Cocker Spaniel doesn't need to rise to any challenges, so why should we worry about keeping that alive in the APBT?

I think preservation of the APBT as the whole, undiluted, beast becomes even more vitally important in light of such pervasive mindsets.  And I think the most important thing we can do is to show others that these things have a place.  We're cracking away at a tough nut when we try to convince people that fighting dogs do serve a purpose here, now, in a "civilized" society.  We need to be able to prove it.  There is a use for high pain tolerance, just like there is a use for abundant drive and all the rest.  These things translate well into other areas of dog training, so its time to use all our tools and show people just why we need APBTs and why we need them in their working form.

I am as guilty as anybody of ignoring some of the things people do because they just aren't as "cool" as my weekend weight pulls.  But in the area of gaining the breed a place in our world, we should all give full respect to people who do things like therapy work, programs where children read to dogs, SAR, or who take a service Pit Bull to town meetings, et cetera.  These kinds of public deeds do the APBT a great service, and I bow down to these people.  A dog doing therapy work may not be as visually impressive as a dog pulling 6,000 lbs on a cart, but he will probably touch more people in his life than the latter.  He will have a far greater chance to educate and influence the public, because only a tiny sliver of the population will be at a dog show on any given weekend.  Both have a place in breed preservation!

To summarize, my thoughts are that we need to preserve the American Pit Bull Terrier:

  • as he is supposed to look

  • with the drive and willingness he is supposed to have

  • and in a manner that translates well into today's world

Well, how should we do this?  I don't know!  We will all choose our own path and believe it the right one for us and our breed.  I just hope that we all remember that the APBT is more than a specific color, or a specific bloodline, or a specific sport.  As we think about preservation, we need to remember the whole dog.  Like I said, I don't have the perfect answer for everybody, and I don't think one exists.  Just let us all keep fighting the good fight and keep the breed "alive" and "lasting" as the total dog he is meant to be..
